RECENT PROJECTS
When the owners of this UES apartment needed more living space, they chose to combine two existing units rather than leave Manhattan. Working closely with the owners and their designers, S.M. Zako’s highly experienced team crafted a spectacular home that responded to the family’s personal and entertainment needs.
DESIGNER KITCHEN
This modern kitchen features imported appliances, custom built cabinetry, exotic wood paneling and luxury stone surfaces. Heated slate stone floors continue throughout the entire apartment
CUSTOM WINE ROOM
For the wine enthusiast owners, this totally renovated apartment features an entertainment area with a custom designed temperature and humidity controlled, glass enclosed wine room.
A DESIGN LOVER'S DINING ROOM
The structural design features of this grand dining room showcases the owner's collection of modern furniture. Custom lighting, automatic blinds and heated stone floors enhance the pleasure of dining in this room.
SPACIAL TRANSFORMATION
This space transforms itself from a cozy retreat into a large entertainment area. A sliding wall feature fully retracts from view allowing the homeowner to double the area's size as needed.
FAMILY ROOM RENOVATION
In an area that was originally a warren of small rooms, S.M. Zako removed the old walls to create this open area that features custom lighting, a sound & entertainment system, and floor heating systems.
DREAM SPA BATHROOM
After water damage from a major building leak, the homeowners took the opportunity to build a dream spa. S.M. Zako delivered a beautiful bath in what had been a challenging space.
NEW GALLEY KITCHEN
S.M. Zako turned this typical dark, cramped-galley style NYC kitchen into this UES home's focal point by removing a wall and adding carefully scaled appliances, custom cabinets, a new eat-in seating area and a custom lighting system.
AN ORGANIZED OASIS
Making the most of every square inch is a high priority in New York City apartments. Custom built millwork provides a dressing area, optimized storage and an Hvac enclosure in this restful bedroom.

Nine years after arriving in the United States as a Greek teenager who spoke no English, I was able to start my own company--S.M. Zako LLC. From the beginning, I committed myself to hard work, to quality craftsmanship, and to honesty and respect in all my dealings with my clients. Today, 35 years later, I am personally gratified to have had so many wonderful clients whose hundreds of word-of-mouth recommendations from one to another through the years have kept my company growing for more than three decades. And I am hugely grateful for this fact especially: most of my clients, by the time their jobs were finished, became my friends. Truly an American dream—Wow!
Today, more than three decades after my wife Maria and I became the first generation of S.M.Zako, our daughter Stavroula and her husband Michael are now the second generation of S.M. Zako’s family to join the company. Stavroula and Michael bring to our projects the enthusiasm for working with clients that is a hallmark of our company, along with their knowledge of today’s 21st century technologies which are making the construction industry an amazing place to work!

Since 2003, Stavroula has managed all of the internal operations of a busy construction firm in New York City. And though her love of great design reinforces her pleasure in procuring the wide spectrum of beautiful lighting, appliances and finish materials needed for S.M. Zako’s varied residential projects, her greatest pleasure comes from working directly with clients. Ask Stavroula what she enjoys most in her very busy schedule and she will tell you it’s the moment in a construction project when work has progressed to the point a homeowner can finally see what they have previously only envisioned: “They can see their dream emerging right before their eyes…that moment is so gratifying for me!”

Since 2007 Michael has worked closely with S.M.Zako’s clients as well as their architects, designers and the NYC Department of Buildings to be certain each project is beautifully and efficiently executed. In the tradition of S.M. Zako’s personalized care, Michael couples his talents for problem-solving with his broad knowledge of materials and systems to meet the specialized needs of our clients. Committed to finishing challenging projects on time, Michael oversees whatever a project needs from scheduling talented old-world craftsmen and expert technicians to procuring hard-to-find and bespoke materials. Because he always goes the extra mile in researching the best solutions for a project, Michael is a valued resource for our clients and their design teams.
